Karelian language has no borders

On February, 28 the Russian Center of Science and Culture in Helsinki has hosted a celebration of the 175th anniversary of publication of Karelian-Finnish epos Kalevala. The celebration was held jointly with the Karelian Educational Society and the Karelian Language Society of Finland within the scope of the International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures declared by UNESCO.

That day Kalevala and Karelian language became a subject of the discussion seminar.

In November, 2009 Karelian language in Finland was granted the status of language of the minority, at the same time Kalevala translated into Livvic dialect of Karelian language has been published. Karelian and Finnish experts in the field of history, Finno-Ugric studies and linguistics have been supporting effective cooperation for a long time. This seminar was no exception, its participants were Professor of Petrozavodsk State University and University of Joensuu Pekka Zaikov, interpreters Eino Kiuru and Zynaida Dubinina, the editor-in-chief of the Oma Mua newspaper, chairlady of
The Union of Karelian People regional public organization Natalia Sinitskaya, chairlady of the board of the Young Karelia, Karelian youth public organization Natalia Antonova, Deputy Minister of the Republic of Karelia on National Politics and Relations with Religious Associations Elena Bogdanova.

One of the most active participants of the social movement for revival of Karelian language in Finland is Archbishop Leo of Karelia and All Finland. In his speech at the seminar he has told about drafting a bill on state languages of the Finnish Republic, implementation of projects and activities directed on popularization of Karelian language and culture.

Finnish organizations - Karelian Educational Society and the Karelian Language Society of Finland - have organized presentation of their activities including campaigns for subscription for Oma Mua and Vienan Karjala Karelian language newspapers in Finland.

Samples of live Karelian language were presented by actors of Kalevala folk theatre from the Republic of Karelia in the performance on The American Bride play by Markku Hattula and folk-musician Santtu Karhu with his band Talvisovatfrom Petrozavodsk.

The same day in the Russian Center of Science and Culture there opened the exhibition
In the Heath of Kalevala by Karelian artists Irina Poroshina and Dmitry Uchuvatkin presenting picturesque paintings and designer's costumes created in the spirit of Finno-Ugric ethnofuturism.

Representatives of the Republic of Karelia have visited offices of the Karelian Educational Society and the Karelian Language Society of Finland, have drawn plans of their further teamwork. The next joint action to be held in Petrozavodsk on March, 21 is the annual assembly of The Union of Karelian People regional public organization.

This meeting became another step in consolidation of international cooperation in the field of preservation and development of the native language and original culture of Karelian people.
